I've always loved watches. When I was a child, my maternal grandfather owned a small jewelry shop in Baltimore. I never think about him without thinking about watches. My brother and I would go visit him traveling by train from Annapolis. I was fascinated by the watches and clocks he repaired. I could watch him work for hours on end. They were beautiful, delicate and, sometimes, pretty loud. Some were so small I wondered how he could work on them; however, he had an eyepiece and tiny little instruments to help him. And, he wore a green visor.
He lived above the shop and when we stayed overnight, we could hear the clanging of the trolley car outside his windows. He had a tall grandfather clock at home that made noise you could hear all over the house. It chimed on the hour and was very comforting to hear. I still own a small grandfather clock.
Growing up, people seemed to only give me watches that had stretchable gold bands that pinched my skin if I wasn't careful about how I put them on. No nice comfortable leather bands or other soft materials to protect my skin from those nicks and pinches. Ouch!
Their faces were tiny with hands so small it was hard to see the time. They were mechanical and had to be wound just about everyday. There was no such thing as an automatic or self-winding watch. You wound it yourself. In fact, I was always winding mine so tightly that the springs would invariably pop and that was the end of that.
If I left my watch in a drawer for a while, it stopped running or it lost time. No backlighting so you could see the time in the dark. They were not water-resistant or splash-proof, so if I forgot and got water splashed in it, it just died! They were not very durable, either. Lots of maintenance was required and I never seemed to get them repaired; it was not convenient in my small home town, so I always had a drawer of old broken watches.
It was not until the early sixties that watch manufacturers and designers began to promote ladies watches. This effort resulted in larger watches with a variety of comfortable and fashionable bands. Previously, there was very little innovation in timepieces for women. There were no sports watches or watches for a soccer mom or professional woman that you could wear without having to worry about how you treated it.
Watches for women have undergone a welcome change. Some are luxurious, long-lasting, trendy. Others are fashionable appearing in a variety of colors and shapes; including animal, flower, star. I love the fact that you can have one in every color for every outfit and every occasion, if you like. There are even watches inside of watches, kind of like picture in picture TV.

You have probably seen the image of a women that is actually two images in one. Some people that look at the image see an old woman while other people that look at the same image see a beautiful young woman. How you choose to look at that image determines whether you see a beautiful young woman or an old woman. The same thing applies to jewelry and craft photography.

For example, if you and I where to photograph the same piece of jewelry, chances are pretty good that your image would look different than mine. Why is that? Because I try to compose the perfect image in my mind first before I even pick up my camera.

On the other hand, you may just place the jewelry item in your photo light box without spending time to pick out a good background color for your image or arrange the jewelry nicely before you take the photograph. Then you turn on the lights and your camera, point the camera at the jewelry and take a few photographs of the jewelry and quit. You probably spent ten minutes or less photographing that piece of jewelry. Is my assumption of your jewelry photography correct?
When I take the photograph of the same piece of jewelry, I take time to choose the proper background, lay out the jewelry nicely, take several photographs of that item, then I check them to see if the images appear the way that I pictured them to look in my mind. I may not like what I see after I have taken the first couple of photographs so I may rearrange the jewelry, change the background, reposition my camera, or make adjustments to the lighting. I may take twenty to sixty photographs and spend twenty to forty minutes photographing that same piece of jewelry that you spent just ten minutes photographing.

I do this because when people see my jewelry photograph I want them to see the beautiful young woman instead of the old woman.

Gold Plated Or Real? Critical Information You Need To Know When Buying Jewelry!

I recently had an inquiry though our website contact form as to the meaning of this marking on a piece of jewelry: "CRP 10K". Does that mean that the item is gold plated, or is it 10 karat gold? The answer is at the end of this article....
First, a little background. The karat marking of gold jewelry is sort of like the English system of weights and measures as compared to the Metric system. (Except that in England, they spell it "carat". In the USA, we use "carat" for gemstones.) Karat weights are based on the idea that pure gold is 24 karat. But pure gold is too soft to use for most kinds of jewelry, and of course it is also highly valuable. So gold is almost always mixed, or alloyed, with other less valuable, but stronger metals to give it more strength. Otherwise, a pure gold ring would easily get gouged, deeply scratched, or bent.
To indicate the ratio of gold to alloys, the karat system was developed. Since 24 karat, abbreviated 24K, is 99.9% pure gold (realistically, it cannot be 100%), one karat is 1/24 pure gold. But a one karat gold ring would only be about 4.2% gold! So, you will find that gold used in jewelry is typically alloyed from about 10K, which is 10/24 gold, or 41.7% gold, up to 22K gold, which would be 91.7% gold. Sometimes an item may be stamped "14KP", where the letter "P" stands for "plumb gold", just another way of saying that the item is not composed of anything that is not 14K gold.
In the United States, an item must have be at least 10K in order to be called "gold" jewelry, and the typical markings are 10K, 14K, 18K and 22K. Items manufactured in other countries are often marked in "fineness", which is simply 100 times the percentage of gold content without the percent mark. So, 14K gold is 14/24 = 58.3% gold, but the fineness is 583, or often marked as 585. 24K, by the way, has a fineness of 999. Countries other than the US have different standards for what can be called "gold": in France and Italy, the item must be at least 18K, but in Germany, it is only 8K! Fineness is also applied to other jewelry metals such as platinum and silver.
So, now what about items that are not "solid gold"? That terminology is a little confusing--"solid gold" could mean "non-alloyed gold", that is, a fineness of 999. Or, it could mean "made out of gold and not hollow or plated". For the purposes of our discussion here, we will use the latter meaning, although in the US, a seller cannot use the term "solid gold" unless the item is solid 24K gold!
Gold is often applied to a cheaper (and stronger) metal, such as brass or copper, to make a much less expensive piece of jewelry. For some large items, this makes a lot of sense--for instance, a gold locket is very expensive if it is "solid gold", so that is why you often see gold plated lockets. Gold plating is not a good thing, however, when it is used on a jewelry item that gets a lot of wear, such as a ring. Depending on the thickness, plating can wear off in a matter of weeks on such an item, quickly exposing the base metal. and creating tarnish and corrosion.
Gold can be applied to an item using an electrical current, termed "gold electroplate", and it is marked "GEP" (since the applied layer is pure gold, it could be said to be "24K gold plated"). Gold electroplating must be, by US law, at least 7 mils thick (a "mil" is one-millionth of an inch). If it is less than that, the item is said to be "gold flashed" or "gold washed". Gold may also be applied in a thicker layer than electroplating by means of mechanically bonding the gold to the base metal; the item is then said to be "gold filled", marked as "GF". The US legal requirement for GF is at least 10K gold which makes up at least 1/20, or 5%, of the weight of the item. This would mean the item would be marked as "10KGF", but if the gold was higher quality, you would see "18KGF", for example. A similar process is gold plate, marked "GP", or rolled gold plate, marked "RGP". This process would specify the percentage of gold, as well as the quality, in the stamping, such as "1/40 14K RGP", which would indicate that 1/40 of the weight of the piece is composed of 14K gold.
Finally, I should note that it is common to gold plate (either electrically or mechanically) jewelry items made of sterling silver. This result is termed "vermeil", pronounced "vehr-may", and requires that the plating be at least 120 mils of 24k gold. But, not all gold-plated silver is vermeil. It is, of course, possible to electroplate silver and simply mark it as "GEP", which would only require a 7 mil layer of gold! So, read those magazine advertisements carefully when they speak of "24K gold-plated sterling silver!"
So, back to the example. Within "CRP 10K", only the "10K" fits any legal marking, so we can assume that, if the item is legally marked, that it is made of "solid" 10K gold. The "CRP" does not fit any of the standard markings, so it is probably an abbreviation of the jewelry manufacturer.

In the past few years, several class action law suits have been filed claiming that DeBeers S.A. violated antitrust, unfair competition and consumer protection laws by doing such things as monopolizing the supplies of diamonds and by conspiring to fix and artificially raise prices.
These actions have kept DeBeers and its officers out of the United States for decades and they have finally decided that it would be worth their while to settle up with the government of this country so that they can enter into the United States directly in order to do business here rather than depending on a network of diamond dealers, cutters, and retailers to bring you your diamonds.
The DeBeers lawsuit settlement has been offered before going to trial and must go before a fairness hearing to determine if the settlement is fair to all parties concerned, but if accepted, the DeBeers settlement could mean money in your pocket.
If you were located in the United States and purchased a diamond or diamond jewelry during the period of January 1, 1994 and March 31, 2006 you may have a diamond rebate coming. How much will depend on how much you spent and how many people claim their share of the rebate.

Tiffany's claims they are as strict as AGS or GIA(the two grading labs with the strongest reputations), however this has been reported to not be the case when diamonds from Tiffany's have been sent to GIA or AGS for examination. Obviously, they know that the higher grades the diamond receives - the more they can charge.

The jewelry at Tiffany's is beautiful. I rarely see a Tiffany's engagement ring that I don't think is stunning. However, what is even more stunning is that they get away with charging the prices they do.
